{"id":5018,"date":"2018-11-28T20:39:26","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T20:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/?p=5018"},"modified":"2022-07-26T14:01:31","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T14:01:31","slug":"millennials-lead-in-high-end-pet-food-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/millennials-lead-in-high-end-pet-food-spending\/","title":{"rendered":"Millennials Lead in High-End Pet Food Spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Millennials might be waiting longer to get married, buy a house, or <a href=\"\/how-millennials-waiting-to-have-kids-is-affecting-big-brands\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have children<\/span><\/a>, but are instead choosing to become pet owners, and pampering their pets with high-end foods.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5020\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/petfood2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While this might be good news for the pets, it\u2019s causing some problems for some of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/millennials-buy-high-end-pet-food-hurts-purina-kibbles-n-bits-2018-11?utm_content=buffer4d418&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">industry\u2019s household names<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/big-food-encounters-familiar-challenges-in-pet-food-aisle-1542018602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent report by\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>,<\/a><\/span> legacy pet-food brands such as Pedigree, Purina, Gravy Train, and Kibbles \u2018n Bits have all seen slower sales as pet owners shift toward premium-pet-food products.<\/p>\n<h4>What&#8217;s causing this shift?<\/h4>\n<p>\u201c[Millennials] treat them like it was their firstborn child,\u201d said Beverley Petrunich, owner of DoGone Fun, a dog-day-care center in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0Nielsen, annual household spending on pet food among pet owners increased 36% between 2007 and 2017. This has led to a flurry of new brands selling more premium food and \u201chuman-grade\u201d snacks, including Rachael Ray\u2019s Nutrish brand, which uses high-end ingredients and even sells gluten-free meals for pets.<\/p>\n<p>According to new data analytics, more than 4,500 new pet-food products were introduced in 2017, which was a 45% increase from the year before. The majority of those new products were premium. This shift has led to prices rising substantially, with the average price of pet food increasing from $1.71 a pound in 2011 to $2.55 a pound by the end of 2017.<\/p>\n<h4>Each year the total amount spent on pets has increased.<\/h4>\n<p>According to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), US pet owners spent $69.5 billion on their pets last year, up from $66.75 billion in 2016 and $41.2 billion in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Millennials are not stopping at high-end pet food, though. They are also leading the charge in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/millennials-lead-the-36-billion-crafting-industry\/\" rel=\"noopener\">$36 billion crafting industry<\/a><\/span>, healthy-snack industry, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/4-reasons-houseplants-perfect-millennial-trend\/\" rel=\"noopener\">houseplant industry<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once more Millennials start having kids, it will be interesting to see if they continue to purchase premium brands, or if they will fall back on the legacy brands.
