{"id":4779,"date":"2018-10-03T20:18:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T20:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/?p=4779"},"modified":"2022-07-23T06:54:41","modified_gmt":"2022-07-23T06:54:41","slug":"how-to-make-gen-z-your-best-customer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/how-to-make-gen-z-your-best-customer\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Make Gen Z Your Best Customer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4782\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/GenZshopping2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Retailers take note: Gen Z, the generation after Millennials, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stores.org\/2018\/09\/10\/born-for-digital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already have access to $44 billion<\/a><\/span> in buying power.<\/p>\n<p>How can you make your store and brand attractive to this generation?<\/p>\n<h4>Offer a flawless digital experience<\/h4>\n<p>For Gen Z, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/how-obsessed-is-gen-z-with-mobile-technology\/\" rel=\"noopener\">smartphones have always existed<\/a>.<\/span> If you don\u2019t have an app or website or, worse, if it\u2019s outdated or slow to load, you\u2019ll lose Gen Z in an instant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen Z has different expectations because for them, it has always been fast,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/stores.org\/2018\/09\/10\/born-for-digital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">said Jason Dorsey,<\/span><\/a> Millennial expert and President of the Center for Generational Kinetics.<\/p>\n<h4>Make your in-store experience unforgettable<\/h4>\n<p>Despite Gen Z\u2019s preference for digital everything, they still enjoy the in-store experience. In fact, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/resources\/retail-library\/uniquely-gen-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 98%<\/a> <\/span>of Gen Z still prefers to make purchases in bricks-and-mortar stores. They enjoy the <em>experience<\/em> of shopping, as much as the ultimate purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, this is also attracting them to shopping malls, despite the perception that mall culture had fizzled out. A large percentage of Gen Z is waiting longer to get their drivers license, so many are still at the mercy of where their parents will drive them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re relying on their parents or other forms of transportation at a later age, and that can have an impact on shopping trends and when and where they shop,\u201d said Dorsey.<\/p>\n<h4>Be transparent<\/h4>\n<p>Gen Z came of age in the wake of the Great Recession, and they\u2019ve seen their parents and Millennial older siblings struggle with money and debt. Most were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/4-hallmark-gen-z-characteristics\/\" rel=\"noopener\">raised with a sense of economic caution<\/a><\/span> about the future, Dorsey explained. It\u2019s driving many of them to be more conservative about debt and more pragmatic in their spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen Z is intentionally choosing not to buy brands with logos and pay premium prices for everyday items. Some would rather get things that were not name brand, or even from thrift stores and get <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/gen-z-spending-habits\/\" rel=\"noopener\">more utility and value for their money<\/a>,<\/span>\u201d Dorsey explained.<\/p>\n<h4>Offer mobile pay options<\/h4>\n<p>While Gen Z currently prefers paying in cash, researchers believe their strong connection to mobile devices will make them the first generation to truly adopt mobile payment. \u201cI think they will be the first generation where <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/venmo-offers-gen-z-millennials-financial-control\/\" rel=\"noopener\">digital payment<\/a><\/span> is truly not only normal, but expected,\u201d Dorsey said.<\/p>\n<p>Now is the time for retailers to really pay attention to what Gen Z wants from a shopping experience.
