In fact, researchers are comparing them more to the Traditionalist, or Silent, Generation that came of age during the Great Depression and World War II. Gen Z came of age during the Great Recession, terror threats, school shootings, and <a href=\"\/how-obsessed-is-gen-z-with-mobile-technology\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">they\u2019ve never known a world without smartphones and social media.<\/span><\/a> All of these factors have made this generation economically cautious, tech-savvy, and hard-working.<\/p>\n<h4>What does this mean for employers?<\/h4>\n<p>Gen Z is willing to work hard for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/gen-z-uses-banks-differently\/\" rel=\"noopener\">financial security<\/a>.<\/span> The oldest Gen Zers are more interested in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/graphics\/genz-is-coming-to-your-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making work a central part<\/a><\/span> of their lives and are more willing to work overtime than most Millennials. Millennials are all about work-life balance, but Gen Z <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/what-does-gen-z-value-in-the-workplace\/\" rel=\"noopener\">will work extra<\/a><\/span> if it means benefits and security.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z\u2019s conservative financial view is directly tied to seeing their Millennial predecessors drowning in student debt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drdenisevilla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denise Villa<\/a><\/span>, CEO of the Center for Generational Kinetics, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/graphics\/genz-is-coming-to-your-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained to the Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/span> that focus groups show some Gen Z members are intentionally choosing less-expensive, lower-status colleges to lessen debt loads.<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/embed\/medias\/odla6qr0y1.jsonp\" async><\/script><script src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/assets\/external\/E-v1.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"wistia_responsive_padding\" style=\"padding: 100.0% 0 0 0; position: relative;\">\n<div class=\"wistia_responsive_wrapper\" style=\"height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%;\">\n<div class=\"wistia_embed wistia_async_odla6qr0y1 videoFoam=true\" style=\"height: 100%; position: relative; width: 100%;\">\n<div class=\"wistia_swatch\" style=\"height: 100%; left: 0; opacity: 0; overflow: hidden; position: absolute; top: 0; transition: opacity 200ms; width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"filter: blur(5px); height: 100%; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.com\/embed\/medias\/odla6qr0y1\/swatch\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>How can employers manage Gen Z?<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Be up front.<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/3-things-employers-need-to-know-about-gen-z\/\">Gen Z employees<\/a> <\/span>want managers who will step in to help them handle uncomfortable situations like conflicts with co-workers and provide granular feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Understand their mental state.<\/strong> Gen Z is reporting higher levels of anxiety and depression as teens and young adults than previous generations.
