{"id":4575,"date":"2018-06-05T20:15:56","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T20:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/?p=4575"},"modified":"2022-07-23T07:48:44","modified_gmt":"2022-07-23T07:48:44","slug":"will-millennials-ever-climb-out-of-the-great-recession-rut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/will-millennials-ever-climb-out-of-the-great-recession-rut\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Millennials Ever Climb Out of the Great Recession Rut?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s no secret that Millennials continue to face a tougher financial reality, but just how far behind are they compared to previous generations when they were the same age?<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4576\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Millennialsandmoney.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A new study from the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/business\/2018\/05\/millennials-are-in-a-deep-financial-hole-compared-to-past-generations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis<\/a><\/span> found that households headed by someone born before 1960 are better off, while younger households headed by someone born after 1960 are generally worse off.<\/p>\n<p>And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/Millennials-Gen-Y-Generation-Y-info\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Millennials<\/a><\/span> born in the 1980s got the worst deal of all. As of 2016, their median net worth was 34% lower than other generations at the same age. To compare, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/gen-x-may-unprepared-take-caregiver-role-aging-parents\/\" rel=\"noopener\">GenXers<\/a><\/span> were just 18% behind.<\/p>\n<h4>What\u2019s causing the disparity?<\/h4>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief, the report found the problem is not how much Millennials are earning. Instead, because Millennials are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/rising-student-debt-weighs-heavily-millennials\/\" rel=\"noopener\">struggling with student debt<\/a><\/span>, car loans, and credit card balances, less than half own homes, and relatively few hold assets like stocks, it\u2019s possible they will never build wealth fast enough to match previous generations.<\/p>\n<p>This shortfall in earning has caused Millennials to delay getting married, <a href=\"\/how-millennials-waiting-to-have-kids-is-affecting-big-brands\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">put off having children<\/span>,<\/a> and generally pump the breaks on spending on large-ticket items like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/one-thing-millennials-arent-buying-online\/\" rel=\"noopener\">cars<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/4225-2\/\" rel=\"noopener\">saving for retirement<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>What does the future hold for Millennials?<\/h4>\n<p>All might not be lost for Millennials, though. According to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/05\/22\/news\/economy\/1980s-millennials-great-recession-study\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent CNN Money article<\/a> <\/span>referencing the same Fed Reserve study, those born in the 1980s have two major things going for them:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>They have a lot of time to get back on track.<\/li>\n<li>They are the most educated generation, with the highest earning potential.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It will be interesting to see if Millennials ever climb out of this financial rut and how their Gen Z successors will fare in this economy.<\/p>\n<h4>Solve Your Gen Z Challenges with Custom Generational Research<\/h4>\n<p>We lead national and international Gen Z and generational studies for our clients every day.
