{"id":4481,"date":"2018-04-06T17:18:44","date_gmt":"2018-04-06T17:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/?p=4481"},"modified":"2022-07-23T09:09:04","modified_gmt":"2022-07-23T09:09:04","slug":"why-do-millennial-employees-need-strong-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genhq.com\/why-do-millennial-employees-need-strong-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do Millennial Employees Need Strong Leadership?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Millennials are currently the largest generation in the workforce, and they have a surprising lack of confidence in their managers.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4482\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/MillennialsnLeadership2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ultimatesoftware.com\/PR\/Press-Release\/New-National-Study-Conducted-by-Ultimate-Software-Reveals-Need-for-Greater-Focus-on-Manager-Employee-Relationships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent national survey<\/a><\/span> conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ultimatesoftware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ultimate Software<\/span><\/a> and The Center for Generational Kinetics (CGK), 80% of employees said they could do their job without their managers.<\/p>\n<h4>High Costs of Bad Leaders and Disengaged Employees<\/h4>\n<p>The evidence suggests many of today\u2019s organizations are run by managers who aren\u2019t particularly good leaders. And bad leadership leads to disengaged employees, mediocre performance, and higher attrition.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbestechcouncil\/2018\/02\/08\/employees-dont-trust-their-managers-and-its-hurting-your-bottom-line\/#eae4dec1f336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ccording to Gallup&#8217;s 2015 State of the American Manager<\/a><\/span>, managers account for at least 70% of the variance in employee engagement scores across all business units. Additionally, disengaged employees cost up to $500 billion annually in productivity losses.<\/p>\n<h4>Trusting Leadership is Essential for Millennial Employees<\/h4>\n<p>Employers understand that managers substantially impact employee job performance, longevity and morale, but the Ultimate Software and CGK study confirmed that this relationship has a greater impact on employee satisfaction <em>than any other factor<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Trust serves as the foundation for any relationship, and almost everyone surveyed said that having trust in their bosses was essential to workplace satisfaction. But while 80% of managers said they\u2019re transparent with their teams, just 55% of employees agreed.<\/p>\n<p>What stands out even more is that only 53% of employees felt like their managers actually cared about their well-being.<\/p>\n<h4>Invest in Leadership Development and Mentor Programs<\/h4>\n<p>To get the most out of all employees, regardless of generation, organizations must invest in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/3-actions-set-apart-leaders-winning-millennials\/\" rel=\"noopener\">leadership development<\/a>.<\/span> Less than half of today\u2019s managers <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/millennials-want-boss\/\" rel=\"noopener\">have a mentor<\/a><\/span> to help them become a better manager; for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/rise-entrepreneurial-baby-boomer\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Baby Boomers<\/a>,<\/span> it\u2019s about one-in-four.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, 45% of managers have never received any training at all. Many managers are expected to intuitively know how to coach and motivate their people, which clearly is not the case for most.<\/p>\n<h4>Managers Can\u2019t Ignore the Data When Making Decisions<\/h4>\n<p>Hard data cannot be ignored in the workplace, either, especially when it comes to compensation.
