Millennials might seem like your target market, but it\u2019s actually Gen Xers that are signing up in droves.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4450\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/GenXHealthclub.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clubindustry.com\/fitness-studies\/5-most-popular-health-club-attractions-generation-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IHRSA 2017 Health Club Consumer Report<\/a><\/span>, Gen Xers are more likely to join health clubs than any other demographic, even Millennials. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><a href=\"\/the-generations-hub\/generational-faqs\/\">Gen Xers<\/a><\/em><\/span> currently encompass 33% of all health club members \u2013 a percentage that has remained steady for the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are Gen Xers signing up for health clubs, they\u2019re much more likely to become loyal members. The study found that on average, Gen X stays at their club an entire year longer than members from other generations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 5 Things Gen X Looks for in a Health Club<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the study found that the biggest barrier that Gen X has to exercise is lack of time. This makes sense \u2013 they are in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/gen-x-may-unprepared-take-caregiver-role-aging-parents\/\" rel=\"noopener\">their prime career years<\/a><\/span> and are more likely to have young children at home. It will come as no surprise, then, that the top five features Gen X looks for in a health club are almost all equipment based, with a few high-intensity classes thrown in:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Elliptical motion\/cardio cross trainers<\/li>\n<li>Free weights<\/li>\n<li>Weight resistance machines<\/li>\n<li>Boot camp classes<\/li>\n<li>Treadmills<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Top 5 Things Millennials Look for in a Health Club<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gen Xer\u2019s preferences are in direct contrast to what Millennial health club members prefer. The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clubindustry.com\/fitness-studies\/5-most-popular-health-club-attractions-millennials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same study found that Millennials<\/a> <\/span>much prefer experience-driven workouts in a class-style setting and tend to avoid fixed memberships.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)<\/li>\n<li>Barre classes<\/li>\n<li>Cardio kickboxing classes<\/li>\n<li>Yoga classes<\/li>\n<li>Group cycling<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t Forget to Engage with Generation Z<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Health clubs also must pay attention to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/gen-z-2017\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Generation Z<\/a>,<\/span> the generation after Millennials. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/sxsw-gen-z-research\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Denise Villa, CEO<\/a><\/span> of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/generations-gen-y-millennials-research\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Generational Kinetics<\/a>,<\/span> recently spoke with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Health Club Management<\/span> about the emerging trends between Gen Z and fitness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake sure you\u2019re on YouTube,\u201d Dr. Villa says. \u201cIf you\u2019re not on YouTube, showing people what you do, giving people information and building your following \u2013 be it as a personal trainer or a gym \u2013 then you\u2019re totally missing this generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She suggests that if a gym or health club has a particularly charismatic trainer, she or he needs to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/4149-2\/\" rel=\"noopener\">get on YouTube<\/a><\/span> in order to build that authenticity and to build that following with Gen Z.<\/p>\n<p>It will be crucial for health clubs to pay attention to both generations\u2019 changing needs as they age.
