Many industries are finding it hard to recruit and retain this huge, diverse generation. Solving this challenge is critically important as Millennials now age in range from 22 to 40 and their workplace roles range from entry-level and young professional to managers and executives.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4436\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/CHA-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Solving the challenge of recruiting and retaining Millennial employees is especially urgent for children\u2019s hospitals as they need this next generation of nurses, caregivers, physicians and leaders to provide lifesaving services to communities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking in a children&#8217;s hospital can be more difficult for Millennials, and every generation, than working in other types of hospitals or other healthcare settings,\u201d said <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jasondorsey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason Dorsey<\/a>,<\/span> co-founder and Millennials and Gen Z researcher at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/\" rel=\"noopener\">The Center for Generational Kinetics<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenshospitals.org\/Newsroom\/Childrens-Hospitals-Today\/Articles\/2018\/01\/3-Tips-for-Recruiting-and-Retaining-Millennial-Employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children\u2019s Hospital Association<\/a>,<\/span> Dorsey explained, \u201cChildren\u2019s hospitals have an incredibly important mission, but a lot of times, they are misunderstood. So it\u2019s really important to bring that mission, impact and human side forward in recruiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Children\u2019s hospitals need to bring their institutions to life through employment branding that resonates with Millennial job seekers. \u201cThat means sharing behind-the-scenes videos, talking about the culture, how you\u2019re involved in the community and playing up the human side of the children&#8217;s hospital,\u201d Dorsey said.<\/p>\n<p>Here are Jason Dorsey\u2019s three tips for recruiting and retaining Millennial talent in children\u2019s hospitals:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.Paint a clear picture of the workplace experience.<\/strong> \u201cMake sure there is accuracy in the experience itself, so <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/importance-word-millennial\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Millennials<\/a><\/span> know what they are getting into,\u201d Dorsey said. \u201cIf they don\u2019t understand the reality of the position, they may walk out.\u201d Or, as Dorsey frequently says, if they understand how unique the experience is and where they fit they may find this is the perfect setting to build their long-term career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Provide regular feedback and employer stability<\/strong>. \u201cMillennials need more frequent feedback, we call it \u2018quick-hit feedback,\u2019 so they need a five- or 10-second check-in every two weeks,\u201d Dorsey said. \u201cThey also want to know that there is some sense of employer stability. Many of them have tremendous amounts of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/4225-2\/\" rel=\"noopener\">student loans<\/a>,<\/span> so employer stability is important to them.\u201d You can message stability in descriptions of your children\u2019s hospital and share the feedback frequency in your orientation and onboarding process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Offer clear advancement opportunities<\/strong>. \u201cMillennials want to see there is a talent development pathway or program,\u201d added Dorsey. \u201cThey want to know this isn\u2019t just a hierarchical system in which they can\u2019t move up unless they wait for 20 years. So you need to consider how you are going to think about <em>their<\/em> talent, so they are even more committed, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/millennials-want-boss\/\" rel=\"noopener\">more loyal<\/a><\/span> and more engaged.\u201d This is particularly true in children\u2019s hospitals where Millennial talent frequently receives numerous job offers. Showing them how you\u2019ll invest in unlocking their talent shows you value them and that it aligns with how you value all the people you serve.<\/p>\n<p>While children\u2019s hospitals may face some added challenges in recruiting and retention, they also have an amazing story, powerful mission, and they save lives every day.
