Whereas Baby Boomers and even Gen X might have found purpose and excitement in \u201cclimbing the corporate ladder,\u201d finding satisfaction for ascending within a company from entry-level to senior-level, Millennials prefer to see their career path as less linear and more purpose-driven.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3745\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-1.jpg\" alt=\"1006-pt-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-1.jpg 754w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-1-300x127.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So if a promotion doesn\u2019t allow Millennials to feel they are succeeding in their careers, how do Millennial workers view success? A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/800475\/millennials-need-to-ditch-their-parents-outdated-career-ladders-and-embrace-job-hopping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent essay in Quartz<\/a><\/span> noted that Millennials are far less concerned with traditional metrics of success, like savings and ownership, and are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/millennials-dont-care-about-in-office-espresso-machines\/\" rel=\"noopener\">more focused on \u201cpurpose.\u201d<\/a><\/span> This is proven in Deloitte\u2019s 2015 survey on Millennials which found that a full 50% of Millennials would take a pay cut to find work that matches their values, and a staggering 90% saying they want to use their skills \u201cfor good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3746\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-2.jpg\" alt=\"1006-pt-2\" width=\"736\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-2.jpg 736w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-2-291x300.jpg 291w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today, more than one-third of Americans are freelancers, and that number is only climbing. And, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average job tenure for all employees 25 and older was only five years. One major game-changer is the ease at which people in companies can communicate through technology. No longer is sitting in an office all day the only way to \u201cwork.\u201d Many young workers are realizing that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/millennials-prefer-work-home-means-productivity\/\" rel=\"noopener\">as long as there\u2019s a Wi-Fi connection<\/a><\/span>, work can be done from anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3752\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-3-corrected.jpg\" alt=\"1006-pt-3-corrected\" width=\"750\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-3-corrected.jpg 750w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/1006-pt-3-corrected-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So what can companies do to retain Millennials who are prone to job-hopping, and create a welcoming and stimulating work environment for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/6-things-employers-need-know-gen-z\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen Z, the next generation of workers<\/a><\/span>? It might be up to the country on a larger scale to re-think what a \u201ccareer\u201d means overall.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/800475\/millennials-need-to-ditch-their-parents-outdated-career-ladders-and-embrace-job-hopping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quartz essay encourages<\/a><\/span> the implementation of the \u201clily-pad mindset,\u201d in which workers see their career as a series of steps between different opportunities. This will require companies to adapt, though.
