But some Millennials are so jaded by the struggle that they&#8217;re going their own path: making their own work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3274\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20.png\" alt=\"06-20\" width=\"596\" height=\"875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20.png 596w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20-204x300.png 204w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even though Millennials grew up being told that they can do anything they want if they just put their minds to it, they are not swayed by the American Dream (<a href=\"\/gen-z-believes-american-dream\/\" rel=\"noopener\">unlike their Gen Z successors<\/a>). A huge percentage of them are saddled with student debt, which makes buying a house and starting a retirement plan difficult if not downright impossible.<\/p>\n<p>This is why many Millennials are\u00a0creating their own jobs instead of waiting around to be hired by others.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re focused on making money. We want to be successful and comfortable in the way we live,&#8221; 23-year-old Danielle Walker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/money\/business\/2016\/06\/14\/millennials-american-dream-economy-detroit\/85559382\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Detroit Free Press<\/a>. &#8220;But\u00a0we&#8217;re also not making that to be our end all, be all. We want to be able to travel and to enjoy the different aspects of life. We want to enjoy our jobs. And we&#8217;re a generation that doesn&#8217;t put up with a bunch of stuff we don&#8217;t agree with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jason Dorsey, co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"\/\" rel=\"noopener\">The Center for Generational Kinetics<\/a>, told the Detroit Free Press that the answer to whether the American Dream is lost to Millennials totally <a href=\"\/whats-splitting-the-millennial-generation-in-two\/\" rel=\"noopener\">depends on which half<\/a> of the generation you ask. The American Dream might seem attainable to the half of Millennials who are &#8220;doing everything they are supposed to do,&#8221; like getting a steady job, for example. But for the other half, who are still struggling to find their place in the world &#8212; whether due to a local economy or not having the right skill set &#8212;\u00a0are much more wary of this optimism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20-no-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3275\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20-no-2.png\" alt=\"06-20 no 2\" width=\"588\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20-no-2.png 588w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-20-no-2-300x281.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a generation that wants to show on Instagram how successful they are and post on Facebook how perfect everything is going,&#8221; says Dorsey. &#8220;Yet, looking at their real life, it does not actually look like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Which half of the Millennial generation do you most identify with?
