This generation of 83.5 million Americans is primed to outspend Baby Boomers in 2017. They\u2019re already <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/millennials-prefer-cash-to-traditional-wedding-gifts\/\" rel=\"noopener\">shaking up many industries<\/a><\/span> and changing the way people think about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/millennials-still-living-at-home-despite-improved-job-market\/\" rel=\"noopener\">life stages<\/a><\/span>. But it seems as if the strongest opinions Millennials have is\u2014surprise, surprise\u2014about themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Millennial-Divide.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2183\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Millennial-Divide.jpg\" alt=\"Millennial Divide\" width=\"870\" height=\"635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Millennial-Divide.jpg 870w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Millennial-Divide-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Millennial-Divide-768x561.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2015\/09\/03\/most-millennials-resist-the-millennial-label\/?beta=true&amp;utm_expid=53098246-2.Lly4CFSVQG2lphsg-KopIg.1&amp;utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fnymag.com%2Fthecut%2F2015%2F09%2Fstudy-many-millennials-hate-being-millennials.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study conducted by the Pew Research Center<\/a><\/span>, most Millennials do <em>not<\/em> identify themselves with the term \u201cMillennial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, at the time the study was conducted, only 40% of people ages 18 to 34 consider themselves part of the Millennial generation, while another 33%\u2014mostly older Millennials\u2014consider themselves part of the next older cohort, Generation X.<\/p>\n<p>The study also shows that Millennials are significantly more critical of their generation than older age cohorts are of theirs. Perhaps not surprisingly, generational identity is strongest among Baby Boomers, with 79% of those aged 51 to 69 considering themselves a part of their eponymous generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne part of the Millennial generation <em>is<\/em> doing everything the way they\u2019re supposed to do,\u201d explains Jason Dorsey in his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4f16o9Q0XGE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent TEDxHouston talk<\/a><\/span>. While these Millennials are typically hitting traditional life stages\u2014such as starting a career, getting married, having children and owning a home\u2014it\u2019s taking them on average two to three years longer to achieve than other generations. The other part of the Millennial generation, according to Dorsey, \u201cis <em>not<\/em> creating real-world traction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This dichotomy is perhaps the reason for the generational divide. The Millennials who are advancing and progressing don\u2019t identify with the other group of Millennials who may still be living with their parents and flip-flopping on jobs for a few more years.<\/p>\n<p>But both groups are eventually going to be parents, whether it\u2019s now or a decade from now. How are these two different groups going to parent, and how will this impact <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/igen-gen-z-generation-z-centennials-info\/\" rel=\"noopener\">the generation after Millennials, Gen Z<\/a><\/span>, aka iGen, Generation Z, or Centennials?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have the answers yet,\u201d Jason adds, \u201cBut we want to ask the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Are you a Millennial who doesn\u2019t identify with other Millennials?
