It should come as no surprise, then, that one of the industries Millennials are having a huge impact on is the wedding industry.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2007\" src=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Millennials-and-Wedding-Gifts.jpg\" alt=\"Millennials and Wedding Gifts\" width=\"870\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Millennials-and-Wedding-Gifts.jpg 870w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Millennials-and-Wedding-Gifts-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/genhq.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Millennials-and-Wedding-Gifts-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since Millennials are waiting longer than any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/the-generations-hub\/generational-faqs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">other generation<\/a><\/span> before to tie the knot, it\u2019s understandable that their preference for gifts is different, too.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/26\/fashion\/weddings\/passing-on-wedding-gifts-millennials-prefer-cash.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New York<\/em> <em>Times<\/em> article<\/a><\/span>, young couples are asking for cash, gift cards and lavish honeymoon experiences instead of the more traditional china sets, crystal stemware, and wine decanters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouples of this generation prefer experiences over stuff,\u201d says Jason Dorsey, President and Millennial Researcher at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener\">The Center for Generational Kinetics<\/a><\/span>. \u201cLess is more. This generation of couples lives in smaller spaces and don\u2019t need all of the traditional wedding gifts. Instead, they would prefer a visit to a yoga retreat or tickets to a concert. They want their gifts to have more personal reflections of what they value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another reason for this change is that many Millennials have lived on their own and have already accumulated many household items before deciding to move in with their significant others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people have lived on their own for years, it is hard to register when they marry,\u201d says Dr. Arielle Kuperberg, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \u201cThis generation of couples also cohabitate in great numbers, entertain casually, marry later. We call this the \u2018independent life stage.\u2019 They don\u2019t need anything more for the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this may leave big box department stores in the dust, websites and apps such as SimpleRegistry and Honeyfund have sprung up to cater specifically to this changing tide.
