Most of CGK President Jason Dorsey’s speaking clients and research clients are repeat clients or direct referrals. This has been our growth strategy at CGK since we were founded in 2011. No outbound sales. No fancy advertising. Just focusing on doing great work for clients and letting the results open doors for us to work with more leaders.

We love working with repeat clients because we get to know their team, culture, challenges, opportunities, and strengths over a long period. Going into the details with clients and working with their teams consistently also builds momentum for action, buy-in, trust, innovation, and results across their organization. Repeat clients also lead to case studies which we LOVE because it shows how we worked together to solve their generational challenges. So….

We are thrilled to share this video and quick case study overview from a great company, repeat client, and all-around innovator in their highly traditional industry, Supportworks. They have a unique approach to serving their construction industry customers by focusing on delivering education, resources, and tools that make their customers more successful, which in turn makes their customers more loyal, and as their businesses grow, so does Supportworks’ business. This is unusual in their industry because their competitors focus on rigid contracts, whereas Supportworks doesn’t focus on contracts but rather giving value first and often. You can tell why we are fired up about this great client and their commitment to serving others.

After keynoting their big annual convention in 2021 (standing ovation!), they asked Jason to work with them on a first-of-its-kind national study focusing on recruiting and retention specific to their industry: foundation repair. The study couldn’t be more urgent and high stakes as their industry faces a massive labor shortage and a disconnect between job seekers and potential employers. In addition, foundation repair companies are turning down work because they don’t have enough employees.

The custom study led to numerous shocking and actionable discoveries, which were transformed by Supportworks into ready-to-use tools, videos, plans, and processes for their customers. Their approach: they took the best insights from my keynote last year, the best discoveries from their custom national study specific to their industry, and then combined all of that with their in-house expertise into a complete, ready-to-use solution that their customers can implement immediately for free. Talk about giving value that delivers ROI!

When Jason keynoted their convention this year, Supportworks’ President, Amanda Harrington, revealed the research-based solutions to their customers, and the response was incredible. In fact, within days of the event, Supportworks had already received emails raving about the impact of the strategies and tools on attracting job applicants!

results speaking

During the convention, they shared a case study video about the impact of CGK’s work with them on their business after Jason’s keynote in 2021. The video, story, and the results are inspiring!

Working with clients such as Supportworks is what fuels us to keep pushing for new discoveries, solutions, and tools to bridge generations. Leading the first-ever national recruiting study in the foundation repair industry was exciting and delivered exactly what we sought: hidden trends and new solutions the industry could use immediately—many of which are low cost or no cost and drive tangible outcomes.

This collaboration is also personal to Jason because Supportworks’ customers are primarily family-owned businesses in a large, growing, but highly fragmented and often overlooked industry. Jason grew up in a family-owned business and know firsthand the challenges of employment and bridging generations. After hearing their customers’ employment struggles last year, meeting with those same business owners at this year’s conference was inspiring. He got to hear firsthand story after story about how CGK’s work combined with Supportworks’ reinforcement led to breakthroughs in recruiting, retention, and trust across generations. In fact, Baby Boomer contractors gave him high-fives while thanking him for the impact on their business!!

We are so inspired by what Supportworks is all about (and why they are a repeat best places to work award winner) and how their own family-led business continues to grow and evolve in the service of others.

Reach out to us if you’d like to work on a custom national study to solve the most important workforce or customer challenges facing your organization. You know we love this work and are determined to drive results. Enjoy the video below!

The 2015 Best Places to Work for Millennials list reveals the workplaces where Millennials want to work. It also offers new insights into what it takes to recruit and retain top Millennial employees. If you haven’t seen the list, check it out now, especially if you’re a Millennial in the workforce! This would have not been possible without help from our Title Sponsor, Barnum Financial Group, an office of MetLife and a part of the MetLife Premier Client Group. We wanted to learn more about Barnum and their work with Millennials so you can be in the know, too.

Best Places for Millennials to Work 2015 trophy

We recently got the chance to interview Paul Blanco, Managing Partner at Barnum Financial Group, to get an insider’s peek into the company that made the award possible.

CGK: If someone hadn’t heard of Barnum Financial Group, what would you tell them?

Barnum, an office of MetLife and a part of the MetLife Premier Client Group, provides financial advice and solutions to help people grow, protect and distribute their wealth. We started in 1993 with just nine advisors, and we have grown tremendously since then. We now employ nearly 300 advisors and 150 associates. We had $79M in GDC in 2014, and we’ve set a goal to reach $250M by 2022.

CGK: What makes BFG different from others in your industry?

Barnum strives to build long-term relationships with each client through understanding their unique situation and providing quality service, integrity and financial education. We provide a superior level of support and service to our financial advisors so they can do the same for their clients. We are a small firm that thinks big and has the full capabilities of a stand-alone financial services firm, but we’re nimble enough to stay at the forefront of innovation in this industry.

We refer to ourselves as “a marketing firm that does financial planning,” meaning that we are dedicated to helping our advisors effectively market themselves to get in front of more people, who in turn want and need the financial advice they provide. We are constantly identifying new opportunities to grow our franchise and remain competitive in an ever-changing industry

CGK: Is there anything surprising about BFG?

Most people do not realize that we can work with people in various life stages, ranging from young professionals to people in retirement.

CGK: Why did BFG sponsor this award and the research behind it?

Jason Dorsey and the Center for Generational Kinetics are driving the discussion on attracting and developing Millennials and Gen Y, who are essential for our growth. We believe being a title sponsor of BPTWM will put Barnum front and center with the Millennial generation and will position Barnum as a thought leader in this area. It also provided an opportunity to work more closely with Jason and his team to gain greater insight into this important demographic.

CGK: Why is it important to employ Millennials and get it right?

Millennials are critical to our growth for a number of reasons:

  • Our industry needs to grow the number of advisors available to provide the advice and services aging Baby Boomers need as they transition to retirements that will last longer than those of any prior generation. A well-trained, developed team of Millennials can address that need.
  • As current financial advisors age and retire, we need to develop young talent that can partner with them to ensure business continuation.]
  • Millennials stand to inherit much of the transfer of wealth from the Baby Boomers, so it’s important to have Millenial advisors at Barnum who can begin to establish relationships with this up-and-coming generation of clients.
  • Millennials are now the largest component of the workforce, and they will be more responsible than any prior generation for saving for and investing in their future.
  • On a personal note, I am proud of what we have built at Barnum and all the great work our advisors have done for their clients. I want to make sure we have a great group of young talent to enable Barnum to continue to grow and succeed.

CGK: What are some actions BFG has undertaken to unlock the potential of Millennial
employees?

Our firm started an Emerging Leaders group. We look at this group as our “bench” of leaders. It is comprised of approximately 15 Millennial associates who have expressed an interest in leadership and have demonstrated that they have the necessary skillset for a leadership role. The group meets once a month, with our HR director serving as a moderator. They discuss successes, challenges and general leadership topics. Two times a year, the group goes off-site to spend the day with the Managing Partner.

We also created an internal sales desk made up of 2–3 Millennial associates who support our product specialists by answering basic questions while the specialists are in the field. The purpose of the sales desk is to provide an additional level of support to our advisors while acting as a career track for Millennial associates. After spending 1–2 years working at the sales desk, they have learned enough about the firm and our products to take on larger roles in the organization.

We operate using a “task force” approach to executing ideas. Each new idea is assigned a project team or task force made up of individuals who have the necessary skillsets to bring an idea to life. At least one spot on that team is usually reserved for a Millennial employee. This allows the associate to step away from their day job and work on something a little different while receiving exposure to people and processes that they may not be used to. The Millennial employee gets to learn from established leaders, who get a chance to see the Millennial employee in action.

CGK: Why is it important to employ more than one generation at BFG?

The experience, perspectives and thought processes different generations bring to each other are invaluable. Each generation experiences different world events that can shape their perspective.

When we work with our clients, we often affect multiple generations within a family. Having teams of advisors that span multiple generations is an asset when working with these families.

CGK: What is the biggest myth about Millennial employees?

The stereotype that they don’t want to work hard or take direction—that is not what we see at Barnum. In fact, our Millennials seek out new challenges beyond the scope of their job, often volunteering for different task forces and other initiatives.

A lot has been said about how Millennials dress. Our Millennial employees have embraced the “corporate” look that our clients expect from a financial professional, using accessories to add their own personal flair.

CGK: Why should talented Millennials seek to build their career at BFG?

We are a winning firm. The meaningful work Barnum Financial Group does has a direct effect on the lives of over 250,000 clients. All associates who work at the firm feel like they have a purpose.

A career at BFG empowers associates to build their own businesses while giving them access to the resources of BFG and the strength of MetLife. We were rated as MetLife Premier Client Group’s number-one firm in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013.

We believe in corporate responsibility, and we spend a lot of time and resources giving back to the community.

CGK: What critical strength or asset do Millennials bring to your workplace or the workforce in general?

Millennials’ strength is their ability to innovate and think differently. They can look at a process or initiative and see it from a new perspective. That new perspective helps differentiate us and will prepare us for the future.

CGK: How do you use technology to unlock the potential of your employees in every generation?

We use a new CRM tool that helps us manage our client relationships while allowing each department to communicate with each other. Everyone who has “touched” that client can enter their task and assign tasks to other associates. This system provides all associates with the ability to communicate with each other and hold each other accountable. It is mobile and extremely user friendly.

CGK: If you could go back in time and give your younger self career advice, what one thing would you say?

I would say, “Do not be shy to speak up to offer solutions, give ideas and ask why things are done a certain way.”

CGK: Where can I go online to find information and apply to join the fantastic team at Barnum?

Go to BarnumFinancialGroup.com or call Susie Waters at 203-513-6066 or Jen Frisch at 203-513-6043.

If you haven’t seen the list, check it out now, especially if you’re a Millennial in the workforce! This would have not been possible without help from our outstanding Thought Leadership sponsor, Pacific Dental Services. We wanted to learn more about Pacific Dental Services and their work with Millennials so you can be in the know, too.

Best Places for Millennials to Work Sponsor Spotlight - Pacific Dental Services

We recently had a chance to interview Jennifer Jensen, Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition at Pacific Dental Services, to give us an insider’s peek into the company that made the award possible.

CGK: Can you tell us about PDS in a few sentences?

Pacific Dental Services® (PDS®) is a dental support organization that provides a full scope of business and administrative support services to dentists, including marketing, real estate, payroll, human resources, billing and accounting. PDS-supported offices are located in 14 states across the western, central and southeastern United States.

CGK: Why did PDS sponsor this award and the research behind it?

The majority of hires and employees in the company are Millennials. Our vision is to be the Greatest Dental Company in America, and to do that, we need to have the greatest talent. To attract, hire and retain top talent, PDS needs to understand what drives Millennials; we support the research. We want to be an employer of choice for the Millennial generation to ensure that we continue to grow and develop as a company.

CGK: Why is it valuable to employ more than one generation at PDS?

It is extremely valuable to employ multiple generations for diversity purposes. The last thing a company or department wants is groupthink. A variety of generations brings different styles, thought processes, perspectives and experiences, allowing us to evolve as a company.

PDS_logo_CMYK-01

CGK: Where do you see the biggest differences among generations?

Work style, motivators and communication style.

CGK: What is the biggest myth about Millennial employees?

All Millennials are lazy and will job hop for growth.

CGK: Why would talented Millennials want to build their careers at PDS?

Number one is our entrepreneurial culture, in which team members are in charge of their own growth and success. We also believe in service, in terms of not only providing our supported clinicians with excellent service and support but also giving back to the community.

CGK: What critical strength or asset do Millennials bring to your workplace or the workforce in general?

Agility. Millennials are flexible and open to change; they embrace it.

CGK: What do you think is the biggest lesson Millennials can learn from other generations?

You need to show your value to be recognized. You don’t get a medal for mediocrity.

CGK: If you could sum up in one sentence why working for your company is a great idea, what would that sentence be?

Working for PDS is a great idea because you are surrounded by talented, hardworking individuals who enjoy providing excellent service for their community and PDS-supported offices.

If you haven’t seen the list, check it out now, especially if you’re a Millennial in the workforce! This would have not been possible without the help from our Thought Leadership sponsor, SAS. We wanted to learn more about SAS and their work with Millennials so that you can be in the know, too.

Best Places to Work for Millennials 2015 Sponsor Spotlight - SAS

We recently got the chance to interview SAS Vice President of Human Resources Jenn Mann to give us an insider’s peek into the company that made the award possible.

CGK: Can you tell us about SAS in a few sentences?

SAS is the leader in business analytics software and services, and it is also the largest independent vendor in the business intelligence market. We help customers transform the world in unique ways—from reducing poverty and hunger to improving childhood cancer survival rates, from catching bad guys off the streets to reducing bank fraud. We do this all thanks to the highly creative minds of the employees at SAS.

CGK: What is something most people don’t know about SAS?

SAS’ roots are in education as its beginnings can be traced back to a project the founders worked on at North Carolina State University analyzing agricultural research data. Today, the SAS campus has a collegiate feel, with more than 20 buildings on over 900 beautifully landscaped and wooded acres adorned with art and sculptures.

Furthermore, it’s no surprise that SAS focuses its philanthropic activities on supporting STEM initiatives and ensuring that the next generation of computer innovators have the knowledge and skills to succeed.

CGK: Why did SAS sponsor this award and the research behind it?

We recognize that how people approach and engage in their work is changing. For this reason, we chose to be a part of this project because we recognize the importance of Millennial employees and the insights they bring. We are proud to support this national award.

CGK: What are a some actions SAS has undertaken to unlock the potential of Millennial employees?

SAS’ people are at the center of everything we do and we’re excited to unlock the potential of Millennial employees. The following are two programs in particular that SAS employs:

  • SAS Academies: Three academy training programs in sales, technical enablement or technical support for recent graduates enthusiastic about transitioning into the real world of business. Candidates get paid to learn on the job! They receive in-depth learning, real-world problem solving and lots of mentoring.
  • The Emerging Leaders Program: A program to develop the talent and strengths of young professionals at SAS. Participants expand their job experience, learn to be stewards of healthy living and develop personal leadership styles and skills.

CGK: Why is it important to employ more than one generation at SAS?

Just like companies wouldn’t employ only one type of person, it’s important to have all generations represented in the workplace because they bring the following:

  • Diversity and interplay of ages, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives and thoughts
  • New ideas
  • Relevance

…all of which are important to our core value of staying innovative.

CGK: Where do you see the biggest differences among generations?

  • Communication preferences and style: Most people over the age of 35 prefer to have a face-to-face conversation, while Millennials prefer texting, followed by email and social media. They’re very willing to share openly on social media, where the older generations do not have that comfort level.
  • Career tenure: Millennials are the first generation that has never been expected to work for one company their entire lives. It’s normal for them to frequently change companies, whereas older generations may have stayed at one company for their entire career.
  • Here’s one just for kicks: The older generation, mostly Baby Boomers and Traditionalists, typically still read the newspaper. Millennials often poke fun at them for doing this “old people” activity because they are more likely to consume news via social media, smart phone apps or other online outlets.

CGK: What is the biggest misconception about Millennial employees?

Millennials often get labeled as lazy or entitled, but at SAS, we don’t see that at all. We see that they are very passionate about getting to work on something they believe in and that they want to make a difference from day one. They may challenge the status quo or prefer to work differently than the “traditional” nine-to-fiver—e.g., they may come in later but may still be cranking through a project at 1 a.m.

CGK: Why should talented Millennials seek to build their career at SAS?

First, SAS employees believe in what they do. Whether it’s using our solutions to detect fraud or tracking infectious diseases, our technology touches the world every day. Our employees are given meaningful, impactful work, and they are proud of what they do.

Also, SAS has a very unique culture. We believe the way we live matters, both on and off the job. We give our employees the flexibility to make sure they bring their best self to work every day and are given ample opportunities to grow.

CGK: What is the most unexpected insight you’ve learned from your Millennial employees?

Millennials want the same thing everyone else wants: to feel respected and valued, to work on something valuable and challenging, and to be given the opportunity for growth and development. One thing that’s a little different is that they want more frequent feedback to help them soar to new heights.

Also, Millennials want to “do” (as in, work and be productive), but they also want to “do good” (as in, give back to their community). It’s important for them to give back through work with nonprofits and in other ways that benefit the community outside of SAS.

CGK: What is a critical strength or asset that Millennials bring to your workplace or the workforce in general?

Millennials bring a fresh perspective, new insights and new ways to get things done. They understand that social media matters in terms of connecting with customers, marketing and selling to customers and helping us stay relevant. Furthermore, they’re constantly challenging the status quo.

CGK: What do you think are the biggest lessons Millennials can learn from other generations?

Here are some thoughts directly from Millennials working at SAS:

  • “Learn to love and master your craft. I’ve learned from my mentors and parents how important it is to master your craft. You need to be able to repeat it and explain it to others easily. No matter how great the end result, if you can’t explain the process, you’ll hit a plateau.”
  • “Face-to-face communication shouldn’t be undervalued. Sure, text messages and social media are effective forms of communication, but it’s hard to match the impact and value of face-to-face communication.”
  • “Listen, formulate and then act. Not the reverse. Understanding more of the story, situation and/or problem can elevate your creativity and success.”
  • “Learn about the history/culture of organizations for perspective.”
  • “Respect the knowledge and perspective that accompanies tenure on this planet.”
  • “Loyalty. I was raised with the thought that someone remaining at a company for a long time was a sign of character. Not moving on to the next new shiny object isn’t the cool thing to do, but I still think it has its merits. Showing a commitment to a company/team/project gives other people a sense of comfort knowing you are there to really make a difference, not just always being a stepping stone.”

CGK: If you could sum up in one sentence why working for your company is a great idea, what would that sentence be?

One of our Millennial employees, Andrew Lockhart, Manager of WW Alliances and Product Marketing, said it best: SAS is the best place for interesting, impactful work in a social atmosphere focused on healthy living and flexibility for families.

CGK: Where can I go online to find information and apply to join the awesome team at SAS?

If you’re reading this, you probably—like us—employ or plan to employ Millennials, also known as Generation Y. These are the top findings from our 2015 Best Places to Work For Millennials Award results, representing over 3,000 companies and 500,000 employees.

1. Employment branding is more important than ever. This includes the steps you take to brand both your company and your specific positions in order to appeal to prospective Millennial employees. The most critical touch points include your job description, the career page on your website, and ease of applying. Additional key influencers are social media outlets like GlassDoor.com and other online employment ratings.

2. The second trend we see is the incredible importance of bringing your company’s mission and purpose to life. More than any other generation, Millennial employees want to know and believe in your mission and purpose—which should include valuing your employees and their personal and professional growth.

The Center for Generational Kinetics released today its first annual list of The Best Places to Work for Millennials, just in time for this year’s 1.8 million college graduates seeking to launch their careers. The list, which comes on the heels of news that Millennials are now the largest workforce in America, also offers new insights into what it takes to recruit and retain top Millennial performers.

Announcing the Best Places to Work for Millennials 2015 Award Winners!

To find the best places to work for Millennials, The Center for Generational Kinetics partnered with the workplace excellence research firm Best Companies Group (BCG), which manages over 50 “Best Places to Work” programs around the globe. BCG analyzed data from the more than 3,000 U.S. organizations that participated in its various programs. BCG included policy and benefit offerings from the employer questionnaires, as well as employee engagement data from the more than 500,000 employee surveys conducted in the last 12 months.

In identifying the top 75 best employers for Millennials, the study revealed key attributes that set Millennial-friendly workplaces apart, including:

  • Allowing employees to enroll in healthcare coverage the very first day of work. A whopping 27 percent of the “Best Places to Work for Millennials” offer coverage starting the first day of work, versus just an average of 10 percent at organizations that do not receive this type of workplace greatness recognition.
  • Allowing paid time off for community service. Eighty-one percent of the “Best Places to Work for Millennials” offer paid time off for volunteer work compared to just 53 percent of companies that did not make the list.
  • Offering flextime. Seventy-three percent of “Best Places to Work for Millennials” offer flextime or compressed workweeks as a standard practice versus 46 percent of non-list organizations.
  • The best Millennial workplaces also offer better family-friendly policies including paid parental leave, lactation facilities for nursing mothers and flexible hours for doctors’ visits and school events.

Employees at workplaces that made the “Best Places to Work for Millennials” reported higher levels of satisfaction in company leadership and the opportunity for career advancement. The data also revealed that “feeling valued,” “making progress at work” and “liking the type of work they do” all have a significant impact on the emotional connection, or engagement, Millennials have with their employers.

“Knowing what motivates Millennials to want to stay at a job has never been more important,” said best-selling author and Millennial researcher Jason Dorsey of The Center for Generational Kinetics. “A key segment of the Millennial generation is proving to be highly valuable to employers and defying any negative stereotypes that may exist about their generation.”

“Creating a culture that welcomes, mentors and motivates Millennials has been a critical component of success for our firm,” commented Paul Blanco, managing partner, Barnum Financial Group, an office of MetLife, part of the MetLife Premier Client Group and sponsor of the Center’s research. “In our experience, many in this generation have an entrepreneurial spirit that drives innovation and positive change.”

What was the most important generation-defining moment for Millennials? Was it the Internet, mobile phones, or the Apple watch? The answer is much more poignant: September 11, 2001.

Generation-defining moment

The destruction of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 is the “JFK assassination” for U.S. Millennials. It’s their “Where were you when?” moment. Millennials can tell you exactly where they were when they heard the news, saw it on television, or read about it online. The shock, pain, and aftermath of 9/11 changed the generation forever.

The unforgettable importance of September 11, 2001 is the reason that The Center for Generational Kinetics believes that the birth years for Millennials end in 1995. While beginning and ending birth years for any generational cohort are more gray than black and white, 1995 is an undeniable stopping point for the Millennial generation.

The reason is that people born after 1995 do not remember or have the emotional connection to September 11, 2001 that those born before 1995 do. If you were born after 1995, you are simply too young to have had the real-time exposure and impact from the event. Your brain cannot process the significance of the terrorist event or put it in any context—from personal vulnerability to a geographic, religious, cultural, or other context.

Here’s another way to think about it: If September 11, 2001 has always been history to you, then you are a not a Millennial. You are part of the generation after the Millennials.

We’re just now starting to see the characteristics and trends associated with the generation after the Millennials, which we currently call iGen.

What is your generation’s defining moment? Where were you when it happened?

We are frequently asked, “What is the ‘correct’ name for Millennials?” Do we call them Millennials, Generation Y, Echo Boomers, or something else? The answer is: It depends on where you live.

What is the correct name for Millennials?

In the United States, the more popular name is Millennials. In every other country, the more popular name is Generation Y. The key thing to know is that Millennials and Generation Y are different names for the exact same generation. This is the generation born after Generation X and before Gen Z.

Interestingly, if you ask Millennials if they are a member of the Millennial generation, many of them will say, “No way!” because they don’t feel that they are part of this generation. We see this self-identifying response stemming from two main reasons:

  • Millennials and members of Gen Y—remember, the same generation—are known for believing that they are special and unique. (As a Millennial writing this article, I completely agree!) If you have been told repeatedly that you are special, unique, and one of a kind, then the idea behind a generation—that you are similar to a whole bunch of people approximately your same age—runs directly in conflict with your self-identification of uniqueness. Ironically, the fact that Millennials feel unique and special actually makes them more like other Millennials. But don’t try telling us that.
  • Many of the more common generalizations about Millennials are not flattering. We’ve all heard them: Millennials act entitled, expect to be promoted after three months on the job, or depend on their parents to help them financially well into their late 20s. Frankly, some of these generalizations are often not far from the truth—and it’s not only the accuracy that’s negative but also the judgment that seems to be associated with it. This is particularly true if a Millennial does not feel entitled, started working as a teenager, or has been financially responsible since a young age. (Yes, those Millennials exist, and in large numbers. One of them wrote this article.)

When it comes to the name, choose whichever name fits your geography: Millennials or Gen Y. One key tactic about the name that we share with executives, managers, and entrepreneurs is to pick one name to use within your company and stick with it. This reduces confusion and keeps everyone on the same generational page.

What is your experience with the Millennial generation (aka Gen Y)? Are they entitled or hard working, or have you seen both examples?
